Theory of Airplane Icing

R. Z. Zakinyan

I. P. Mazin’s and L. G. Kachurin’s theories of airplane icing are analyzed. Kachurin’s theory is developed with consideration of heat and mass transfer on the film surface. In this case the results of investigations obtained by R. List and his students during a study of icing of objects placed in a supercooled water aerosol flow were used. It is shown that the nonlinear dependence of the rate of icing on the cloud water content observed in V. D. Stepanenko’s experiments is explained by separation of drops from the fil surface.
