Causes of a Nonmonotonic pH Trend in Snowmelt Sedimentation

N. N. Morar’ and O. A. Chertishcheva

Precipitation fallen over the area and in the vicinity of the Kotlas pulp and paper plant during the winter of 2005/2006 is analyzed for the content of sulfate-ions and pH. No correlation between sulfates and pH was found. Nonmonotonic pH trends during 10 days are indicative of ambiguous processes occurring during snow melting. Maxima and minima in the pH trends can serve as evidence of step-by-step destruction of the colloidal particles formed on condensation nuclei.
