Northward Flux of Zonal Velocity due to Quasi-stationary and Nonstationary Waves in the Atmosphere during Northern Hemisphere Winter

E. A. Gazina, N. N. Sokolikhina, and E. M. Volodin

The zonal wind velocity flux induced by wave motions in the central month of winter (January) is studied from the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data and the general circulation model (GCM) of the Institute of Numerical Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (INM RAS). It is shown that the model describes stationary wave processes with a sufficient accuracy and captures their synoptic period.
