RADAR STUDY OF ELECTRICALLY ACTIVE ZONES IN CONVECTIVE CLOUDS

V. N. Stasenko

Possibilities are considered of radar detection, inside the cloud, of electrically active volumes involved into the thunderstorm discharge. A technique is presented for comparison of radar observations of lightning at the wavelengths of 10 and 200 cm with registrations of electromagnetic radiation from the discharges at 7 and 500 kHz, which allows identifying sources of the radar echoes. It is shown that the MRL-5 radar can detect location, size, and occurrence time of the electrically active volumes; investigation of their microphysical properties will contribute increasing efficiency of thunderstorm and hailstorm modification.
