A new approach to the identification of precipitation of any type and thunderstorms and to the evaluation of their intensity from IR pictures that are obtained from the geostationary satellites is considered. The approach is based on the combined account for the values of the cloud-top radiation temperature and the specialized prognostic information for the lower layer of the atmosphere. The application of this approach to the Meteosat-7 data shows that the results of the diagnosis of the summer precipitation and thunderstorms are consistent with the analogous prediction that is based on the NOAA-16 satellite information.
