Construction of a Reduced Latitude-Longitude Grid for a Global Numerical Weather Prediction Problem

R. Yu. Fadeev

Reduced latitude-longitude grids are widely used in spectral hydrodynamic weather prediction models. The present paper present a method for numerical construction of a reduced grid for a semi-Lagrangian finite-difference weather prediction model. The main purpose of the model is to minimize the number of grid points with a fixed upper limit of deviation of the interpolation error on the grid. A comparative analysis of the grids obtained is made. The method’s virtue lies in the possibility of taking into account the characteristics of the weather prediction model by using additional constraints when constructed the grid. The results of solving the equation of two-dimensional transport on the sphere with the use of the constructed grids show the prospects of the proposed method.
