Assessment of the Possibility of Efficient Stimulation of Precipitation Formation As a Result of Seeding Convective Clouds with Drops of Hygroscopic Salt Solutions

S. A. Vladimirov

The problem of achieving maximum effective stimulation of precipitation formation by hygroscopic methods is examined and an assessment of the optimal sizes of the introduced particles and practical possibility of producing monodisperse spectra of the necessary size is given. On the basis of numerical experiments with Lagrangian model of cloud formation in an ascending warm convective cloud parcel (spectrum of the size of continental-type condensation cloud nuclei), a comparison is made of precipitation stimulation by introducing monodisperse drops of an NaCl solution into the cloud parcel at the level of the cloud base and by pyrotechnic seeding in the subcloud layer (three-component lognormal approximation of the spectrum constructed from the data of experiments in the Republic of South Africa). It is found that, with the use of monodisperse drops of optimal size (25–50 µm), a smaller amount of NaCl solution is required for achieving an effect comparable with pyrotechnic seeding in the subcloud layer.
