CLIMATIC CHARACTERISTICS OF UPWELLING NEAR THE CRIMEAN COAST AND THEIR VARIABILITY

E. A. Lovenkova and A. B. Polonskii

Based on analysis of archival data at Crimean stations, a general characterization of the spatial and temporal variability of coastal upwelling is presented for the period from May to September 1948—2001. It is confirmed that in a large number of cases, upwelling is not associated with local set-up winds but is a consequence of a three-dimensional wind-induced circulation. The seasonal and interannual frequency of sharp temperature drops is analyzed. The low-frequency variations in the upwelling characteristics caused by large-scale processes in the ocean—atmosphere system are found.
