THE USE CLASSIFICATION OF NORTH PACIFIC ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION TYPES FOR DETERMINING THE RELATION WITH THE SOUTHERN OSCILLATION INDEX

A. M. Polyakova and D. D. Kaplunenko

Classification of atmospheric circulation is used with regard for cyclonic and anticyclonic paths in the North Pacific, which is derived from the 50-year observation series. Two-, ten- and thirty-year periodicities are identified. A relation between atmospheric circulation and its large-scale space-time variations, which are attributed to El Nino, is found. Atmospheric circulation types are characterized by space-time variability and represent indicators of climatic processes in the North Pacific.
