STUDY OF TOTAL OZONE VARIABILITY IN AN IMPACT ZONE OF A TROPICAL CYCLONE

V. I. Vasil'ev

Results of studies of space-time variations of total ozone in the tropical zone in the periods preceding the formation and existence of intense tropical cyclones are dealt with. The tropical cyclone (TC) formation and appearance of two maximums in the temporal TO trend are intercorrelated. The first maximum appears 4—8 days before, and the second maximum 1—3 days before a TC is formed. There is a relationship between the formation of local maximums in the temporal TO trend and the frequency of occurrence of TCs. When a TC forms 5—7 days after the previous TC, no matter whether the latter exists or not, two TO peaks appear in the temporal TO trend before the formation of each tropical cyclone. Recommendations are given how to determine characteristic features in the ozone time series and its trend characteristics in order to improve the forecast of TC formation.
