RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ANNUAL MEAN AIR TEMPERATURE IN NORTHWESTERN EURASIA AND THE ARCTIC OSCILLATION

V. N. Kryzhov

A relationship between the annual mean air temperature and monthly mean indices of the Arctic Oscillation (AO) is studied. It is shown that only January and February indices of the AO have a statistically significant influence on northwestern Eurasian annual mean temperature, exerting a direct effect on January and February temperature and indirect effect (through ice and snow cover) on temperature of the next months. The relation with other months, even with winter ones (March, November, and December) synchronously correlated with monthly mean temperature, is statistically insignificant.
