STATISTICAL STRUCTURE OF VERTICAL GRADIENTS OF THE REFRACTIVE INDEX IN EASTERN SIBERIA AND FAR EAST

Statistical characteristics (the first four moments) of the vertical gradient of the refractive index gn of the lower 300-m atmospheric layer over Eastern Siberia, northeastern part of Russia, and the Russian Far East are calculated and analyzed using data from 30 upper-air stations over a 10-year period of observations. The distribution and statistical characteristics of gn in area and time is considered. Regularities in seasonal variations of the mean gn and its standard deviation are analyzed in detail. Five types of seasonal variations of the mean gn and σ are identified for the entire region. It is found that statistical distributions of gn in most cases, despite the opinion spread in radio climatology, substantially differ from a normal random distribution law.
