THE INFLUENCE OF VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE ATMOSPHERIC REFRACTIVE INDEX ON THE VISUAL DETECTION OF A RUNWAY FROM AN AIRCRAFT

B. N. Bobrov and G. S. Nakhmanson

Trajectories of visual observation of surface objects from an aircraft are analyzed as dependent on the vertical distribution of the atmospheric refractive index. Formulas are obtained to calculate the errors of a visually detected horizontal distance from a runway. It is demonstrated that bends of the observation trajectory can result in considerable errors in the visual detection of the runway location.
