THE PHASES OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC OSCILLATION

E. S. Nesterov

Correlation between monthly mean values of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) index in November–February and antecedent sea level pressure anomalies and North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies with a shift of 12 months is calculated for the period from 1948 to 2000. Surface air temperature anomalies and latent heat flux anomalies in the North Atlantic in November–December during the positive and negative phases of the NAO are analyzed. Oceanic and atmospheric conditions favorable to the formation of either phase of the NAO are determined.
