Longitudinal localization of planetary wave phases is studied using expansions in spherical harmonics of the Northern Hemisphere 500-hPa geopotential height fields averaged over consecutive pentads. It is found that certain geographical longitudes are a place of localization of phases of both ultralong waves (with zonal wavenumbers from 1 to 4), which has long been known, and of short synoptic waves, which was not revealed earlier. Longitudinal localization of short synoptic waves is explained by their prevailing orographic instability compared to baroclinic one.
