MID-HOLOCENE AND LAST GLACIAL MAXIMUM ATMOSPHERIC CIRCULATION FEATURES FROM EXPERIMENTS WITH GENERAL CIRCULATION MODELS

G. V. Surkova

Global circulation of the atmosphere 6 and 21 kyr ago is studied at 850 and 200 hPa using the integral index of zonal wind component. Initial wind velocity data are taken from numerical experiments performed with 17 atmospheric general circulation models within the framework of PMIP (Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project). New results of this work show that the lower and upper tropospheric zonal circulation 6 kyr ago differed little from the present-day conditions. The circulation changes 21 kyr ago were more pronounced, especially in the Southern Hemisphere and in the tropics.
