A MICROWAVE PASSIVE METHOD FOR INVESTIGATING STRUCTURE OF THE ATMOSPHERIC BOUNDARY LAYER

Results are presented of an experiment carried out in Obninsk in July—August 1999 with the use of remote microwave sensors of temperature profiles in the atmospheric boundary layer (MTP-5) and contact temperature sensors at a meteorological tower. To estimate scales and energy typical of convective coherent structures, the wavelet analysis of temperature fluctuations is used. For the first time, an estimate of the vertical velocity of coherent structures is obtained with a passive microwave method under conditions of developed instability.
