Surface air temperature series since the 18th century are important for past climate research. Due to frequently changing observation conditions, procedures, and instruments, these series are extremely inhomogeneous and hard to use without a preliminary correction of these inhomegeneities. Until recently correction procedures have been mainly subjective. This paper presents an objective correction method based on different spatial adjustments of temperature series from neighboring stations for different timescales, with simultaneous matching of their time variability characteristics with those obtained foir present-day observational series at the same stations. The method is illustrated by the example of correction of winter air temperature series in Stockholm, Uppsala, and Goteborg (Sweden) in the 19th century.
