ESTIMATION OF TOTAL EVAPORATION IN THE VOLGA RIVER BASIN (FROM DATA OF WATER AND SOIL EVAPORATION MEASUREMENTS)

A problem of how to use data of standard observations of evaporation from the water and soil surface for estimation of total evaporation in the River Volga basin is discussed. A special technique has been developed where the evaporation from the water surface is considered as a characteristic of climatic conditions of the area, while the evaporation from the soil surface is a regional characteristic of specific types of the underlying surface. The state of the active surface of the basin is estimated and its variations are analyzed for the period from the second half of the 1930s to the beginning of the 1990s.
