CLIMATIC pH TRENDS IN SURFACE WATER OF THE CENTRAL AND NORTH ATLANTIC FROM DATA OF IRREGULAR SHIP OBSERVATIONS

A. A. Postnov, V. B. Lapshin, and N. V. Ovinova

Linear pH trends for 1970—1992 are analyzed by five-degree squares over the Central and North Atlantic water area (between 10ºS and 70ºN) based on ship bathymetric measurements in surface waters. It was found that during the period indicated, a statistically significant systematic pH decrease was observed in the eastern Atlantic (east of 45—55ºW) within a latitude band from 5—30 to 70—80ºN. Farther to the south (up to 10ºS), the pH trend was positive but statistically insignificant.
