INFLUENCE OF SOIL FREEZING ON DENSITY

I. L. Kalyuzhnyi, S. A. Lavrov, and V. I. Shtykov

Laboratory and field methods for assessing variations in soil density during winter and late-winter periods are presented. The density of soil was found to decrease above the freezing front and to increase below the front. Basic features of swelling in sand, sandy loam, and medium loam and clay loam are determined. The coefficient of frost swelling was found to be 0.2% for sand, 5% for sandy loam, 9–10% for medium loam, and 11–20% for clay loam. A combination of the main factors affecting the decrease in soil density during freezing is established.
