STUDIES INTO THE ACCURACY OF VERTICAL SOUNDING OF THE LOWER ATMOSPHERE FROM THE TOVS DATA ABOARD THE US POLAR ORBITING SATELLITES

V. Yu. Romasko, V. B. Kashkin, E. L. Zaliznyak, and A. I. Sukhinin

The accuracy of recovering the vertical profiles of geopotential, air temperature, dew point deficit, and wind direction and velocity derived from satellite data (NOAA satellites equipped with TOVS) with a commercial package of programs on vertical sounding data processing ITPP 3.0 is studied. The basic error sources and the ways of their compensation are under consideration. The possibility of data use in the meteorological practice together with the traditional upper-air sounding is shown.
