CALCULATION OF THE ANNUAL CYCLE OF THE ARCTIC OCEAN CIRCULATION

N. G. Yakovlev

In the framework of the semidiagnostic method by J. Sarmiento and K. Bryan the annual cycle of the 3-D current velocity and sea level elevation fields of the Arctic Ocean are reconstructed. The monthly mean NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data on the sea level air pressure and the seasonal mean (winter and summer) hydrological data from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute are used for this purpose. The primitive-equation ocean general circulation model is used for calculations. The calculation results of the annual cycle of the current velocity in four regions of the Arctic Ocean are analyzed: in West Spitsbergen, East Greenland, and Novaya Zemlya (in the Barents Sea) currents and at the south periphery of the Beaufort Sea. Comparison with direct measurements of current velocities demonstrates the reliability of the results obtained.
