CONTRIBUTION OF ARCTIC ANTICYCLONE TO THE DISTRIBUTION OF FRESH WATERS IN THE ARCTIC BASIN

G. V. Alekseev, L. V. Bulatov, and V. F. Zakharov

On the basis of monthly charts of atmospheric pressure for 1937—1992, the Arctic anticyclone (geographical position, central pressure, occurrence) and a corresponding gyre of surface waters and ice in the western Arctic Basin are characterized. The particularities of fresh-water distribution in the Arctic Ocean are analyzed from the data of eight oceanographic AARI surveys (1955—1956 and 1973—1979) and the materials are presented indicating a strong impact of gyre on this distribution.
