AN APPROXIMATION OF CHANNEL TRAVEL CURVES WITH A NEGATIVE SKEWNESS USING AN OPPOSITE TRANSFORMATION OF GAMMA DISTRIBUTION

D. A. Burakov and O. V. Melnikova

Pearson type III and Kritsky—Menkel probability distributions used in hydrology are determined for the coefficient of skewness Cs > 0. It is proposed to use an opposite transformation of gamma distribution to approximate channel travel curves with a negative skew. Such a case takes place when a lateral inflow enters the channel network nonuniformly along the channel length and its substantial fraction is located in the basin head (e.g., rivers flowing from mountains to lowlands). The features of the distribution considered are studied. The formulas are obtained to estimate the moments of opposite distribution transformations.
