TELECONNECTIONS BETWEEN TROPICAL PACIFIC SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE AND NORTHERN HEMISPHERE PRECIPITATION

Teleconnections between sea surface temperature anomalies in the tropical Pacific and precipitation anomalies over the entire Northern Hemisphere, the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, and the temperate zone of Eurasia are established on the basis of ECMWF data using singular value decomposition of the covariance matrix. The study has shown that precipitation anomalies are influenced by tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures, and not the reverse. The response of precipitation to SST anomalies is most apparent in six months.
