V. N. Kryzhov, the Doctor of Science (Geography), the leading researcher of the Hydrometcentre of Russia, was born in Moscow on May 7, 1957.

In 1979 he graduated from Lomonosov Moscow State University majoring in “Meteorology–Climatology”. In 1981–1984 he took the postgraduate course in the Hydrometcentre of the USSR. In 1987 he defended the dissertation for a degree of PhD (Geography) majoring in “Meteorology, Climatology, Agrometeorology”. In 2013 he maintained a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Science (Geography) in the same research area.

Since 1984 he has worked at the Hydrometcentre of Russia (Hydrometcentre of the USSR till 1991): first in the Division for World Weather Analysis (senior engineer, junior scientific officer, scientific officer, senior scientific officer, and leading scientific officer) and since 1998, in the Division for Long-range Weather Forecasting. In the 1990s he took part in research projects of Gazprom and VNIIGAZ on working out the scientific basis of the development of oil and gas fields on the shelf of the Barents and Kara seas.

In 2004 to 2006 he worked as a senior scientific officer of the APEC Climate Center (APCC, Seoul-Busan, the Republic of Korea). He was occupied with the problems of the multimodel long-range weather forecasting. He is the co-author of the method of probabilistic forecasting implemented in APCC and WMO Leading Center for Long-range Forecasting (WMO LC LRF-MME).

V. N. Kryzhov has more than 100 publications. In recent years the majority of the papers of V. N. Kryzhov have dealt with the analysis of cause-and-effect relations in the atmosphere–underlying surface system at the monthly and annual time scales and with the statistical postprocessing of long-range hydrodynamic forecasts.

He reviews the papers for Russian Meteorology and Hydrology, International Journal of Climatology, Journal of Geophysical Research, Geophysical Research Letters, Global and Planetary Change, Journal of Climate, and International Journal of Offshore and Polar Engineering journals.
